When Fairness Doesn’t Feel Fair
Oct 19, 2026
What we usually teach
Fairness is often one of the first things we teach children.
To share.
To take turns.
To treat everyone the same.
And for many children, that is where their understanding of fairness begins.
When fairness is learned differently
But in conversations I’ve had with people who grew up in cross-cultural contexts, one thing often comes up:
Fairness doesn’t always feel that simple.
Growing up between cultures often means moving between different expectations.
What is considered right in one place may not be understood the same way in another.
The same behavior can be received differently depending on where you are - and who you are in that space.
Learning to notice
Over time, this creates a quiet awareness.
That rules are not always neutral.
That fairness is not always applied in the same way.
And so the question becomes less about following rules, and more about trying to understand them:
Who do they work for?
Who do they leave out?
A different kind of understanding
Many describe how this leads to an early ability to see things from different perspectives.
Fairness becomes less about sameness, and more about context.
Not just:
Is this the rule?
But:
How does this feel from somewhere else?
What this means for how we raise children
We often teach children that fairness means treating everyone the same.
But sometimes, fairness requires something more.
It requires noticing difference.
Understanding context.
And being willing to ask questions.
A small shift
So perhaps part of raising globally aware children is not only teaching them what is fair.
But helping them stay curious about it.
A question to take with you
What is your child already noticing about fairness?
And how can you support them in making sense of it - without simplifying it too quickly?
