Raising Children Between Cultures

cross-cultural upbringing multiple cultural identites Sep 07, 2026

In my latest episode of The Everyday Global Citizen Podcast, I reflect on what it means to raise children between cultures - and how this shapes the way they understand themselves and the world.

In the episode, I explore how:

  • Children growing up between cultures navigate different expectations, values, and ways of being
  • This experience is not something they are taught - it is something they learn by living it
  • Cross-cultural childhood can foster flexibility, perspective, and openness to difference
  • At the same time, it can bring moments of confusion, pressure, or not fully fitting in
  • Identity is shaped not only by how children feel — but also by how they are seen by others

What stands out to me is this:

Growing up between cultures is not something that needs to be simplified or resolved.
It is something children need support in understanding and integrating.

Because when children are allowed to connect the different parts of who they are,
they don’t just learn to navigate contradicting inner worlds -
they learn to live with it.
