How Children Develop a Sense of Belonging
May 04, 2026
In my latest episode of The Everyday Global Citizen Podcast, I reflect on how children develop a sense of belonging - and why it is the foundation for raising global citizens.
In the episode, I explore how:
- Belonging is not something we teach directly - children learn it through everyday experiences
- Children constantly pick up signals about whether they are safe, accepted, and allowed to be themselves
- Cross-cultural children may experience belonging differently across contexts
- Over time, children may adjust parts of themselves in order to feel accepted
What stands out to me is this:
Belonging is not built in big moments.
It is shaped through small, repeated signals.
And over time, those signals become a child’s sense of:
This is who I can be here.
If you’d like to explore this more deeply, I invite you to listen to the full episode of The Everyday Global Citizen Podcast.
