Belonging - What Shapes It, and What Can Disrupt It?

From time to time, I return to reflections shaped by my experience of growing up across cultures.

This space is part of that ongoing journey - where I explore questions around identity, belonging, and global citizenship, not only as ideas, but as something lived and experienced over time.

Because for me, these themes are not separate from everyday life.
They show up in how we understand ourselves, how we relate to others, and how we move through the world.

Belonging is one of those themes.

It’s not abstract.
It shows up in simple, everyday questions:

Do I feel at home here?
Can I be myself?
Am I accepted as I am?

What Creates a Sense of Belonging?

Belonging is about where - and with whom - we feel at home.

For many cross-cultural individuals, “home” is not just one place.

It can be shaped by:

  • relationships where we feel understood
  • language we can express ourselves in
  • traditions, food, and values we recognize
  • feeling seen and acknowledged

Even small sensory experiences - like sounds or smells - can create a strong sense of familiarity.

What Can Disrupt Belonging?

Belonging is also something that can be unsettled - often through small, repeated moments.

For example:

  • being asked “Where are you really from?”
  • feeling pressure to choose one identity
  • being defined by labels others give you
  • not seeing yourself reflected in your surroundings

Over time, these experiences can make it harder to feel fully at home.

The Reality of “Both-And” Identity

One important realization is this:

You don’t have to choose.

You can be both-and.

Belonging can exist in multiple places - and it can shift over time.
That doesn’t make you confused.
It means your identity is layered.

A Final Reflection

Belonging is not always about finding one place to fit.

Sometimes, it’s about allowing space for all the parts of who you are.
